Maritza Masten. "I photographed Maritza Marten, the 1992 Cuban Olympic Gold Medalist of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, in Havana in 2001 for the Cuban Olympic Committee. I was asked to photograph all the past and present Olympic winners and world champions of this communist country that produces more world champions than any other country per capita. I left for Cuba on September 14, three days after 9/11. The project was to be displayed in the Olympic Stadium giving the people of Cuba their first glimpse of their country's heroes photographed professionally since Castro's ban of photography of Cuba's athletes in 1959. The Cuban Government denied this dream of the Cuban Olympic Committee and would not permit the photographs to be displayed."
