"This painting was for an article about diet in America. The article mentioned how Black Americans' diet has led to increased levels of heart problems. The article mentioned fast food chains marketing their products to poor communities by selling cheap unhealthy foods. I saw this as a new kind of slavery, slavery of a an unhealthy diet lifestyle. I depicted a black man as a slave tied to a tree, but he is not bound by chains but by his own blood vessels. He is doing this to himself or is conditioned to an unhealthy lifestyle by years of discrimination and a poor self image that is reinforced by the media."
