Jim Fiscus, photographer
Mamou Captain, personal. "Shot at the Mardi Gras in Mamou, Louisiana. The Mamou Mardi Gras is very traditional. No beads. On Fat Tuesday, 500 costumed men go door to door on horseback gathering chickens for the evening gumbo feast. The person giving the chicken gets to command a task, like having all 500 stand up on their horses, leap over a muddy ditch or dance. It all ends prior to midnight, which is the start of Ash Wednesday. This series was shot on 4x5 Linhof on the streets of Mamou as the men returned to town. I shot the event ten years ago and was invited back to document it in 2006 as the Cajuns fear their culture is being diluted."
