“The challenge for this book-cover project was to communicate how citizens within American society are devalued as individuals and trained to be consumers, living their entire lives in an economic snare,” said designer Jason Gabbert. “This solution takes the most versatile symbol of American consumption, the barcode, and turns it into an intrusive being. The typography is treated in a manner that complements the barcode's perspective and adds to its movement and personality. The strong break in the title visually portrays the ‘con’ of consumption, concealed from American citizens by their culture. This solution allows type and imagery to actively complement each other in order to visually communicate the message and actively involve the participant.”
