Underwater Study #1. "I worked underwater for six months attempting to solve the tremendously daunting problems of resolution, composition, clarity, color, ocular comfort, temperature, water chemistry and lighting. I made careful notes so that I wouldn't repeat mistakes and so I could find solutions to each problem. When I felt I had solved the primary series of technical difficulties, I called my friend, Katita Waldo, a prima ballerina with the San Francisco Ballet and asked, ‘Katita, can you swim?’ This was the first image I made that first day of shooting for the underwater series. It was eventually published in WaterDance by GraphisPress in 1995, the first of three monographs (WaterDance, Pool Light and H2O) of images made in, under and around the water using dancers, models and athletes."
