Jim Krantz, photographer
From the Time & Decay personal series. “When I walked into this abandoned Tennessee prison, I had a powerful experience of duality. Unbelievably, the place is swathed in the most glorious, dirty jewel-tones—golds and funky greens, blues and corals—that give you the feeling of walking into a Helen Frankenthaler painting. But its beauty totally contradicts the disturbing reality of what happens in prisons, and what must have happened here. I knew I couldn't capture that contradiction by simply documenting the architecture, so I developed a technique inspired by Frederick Sommer's Smoke on Glass series. The technique helped me better express the distortion and disturbed perspective that prisoners here must have had.”
