"United Airlines introduced nonstop service to Beijing, China from Washington, DC in 2007. Chris Buzelli was commissioned by Arc Worldwide to illustrate a series of ads to promote the new service," said art director Jay Paonessa. "The campaign was inspired by the rich mythological and symbolic imagery of dragons in Chinese culture. In one ad, the Great Wall of China stretches across the countryside and transforms into a powerful dragon. In another, a carp turns into a dragon as it jumps the ‘dragon gate’—a legendary tale of overcoming obstacles and achieving success. The illustration of two dragons coming together to ignite the Olympic flame was also inspired by Chinese mythology. The final illustration represents the competitive spirit of the Beijing 2008 Olympics as three ancient symbols—a golden fu dog, a silver dragon and a bronze phoenix—race across the night sky."
