Tim Mantoani, photographer
"Steve McCurry's image of the Afghan Girl was made in Pakistan in 1984 and ran on the cover of National Geographic in 1985. The girl, Sharbat Gula was thirteen at the time. Her identity remained unknown for seventeen years after several attempts by McCurry to locate her. In January of 2002, a team from National Geographic finally located her in a remote region of Afghanistan and she vividly recalled being photographed since it was the one and only time she had been photographed. Steve has an amazing ability to capture the soul of a person in his images and I felt challenged in making a portrait of him. He came to the 20x24 Polaroid studio in New York for his portrait."
