“To chart the ebb and flow of seasonal hues for Boston magazine, we collected more than 1,200 photographs (from the photo-sharing site Flickr) that showed the Boston Common,” said Fernanda Viegas. “We then applied a custom color analysis program to pick out the key colors for each month of the year, and plotted them in a wheel. The resulting diagram shows the colors found each month, starting with January at the top and moving clockwise. Each stripe on the wheel represents one color; the thickness of the stripe shows how often that color occurred in a given month. White and gray are prominent in snowy January, while an assertive band of green peaks in June. Fuchsia flowers grace the spring months and the colors of leaves turning adorn October. This color wheel appeared as part of Boston magazine’s ‘Metric’ feature in March 2009.”
