"For Men's Journal, done some time in the 1990s. This is one of many pictures using a lot of text pulled from the story. It seemed to work with the rough, naive way I was working at the time. In the '90s I started getting a lot of requests for illustrations that pulled text from the stories. It was usually pretty dry stuff that was difficult to sum up in a single picture. It was enjoyable at first, but I soon tired of adding words to stories that didn't really need text‚ or words for the sake of words. I've always loved to add text in my work, and I continue to incorporate it today, but I prefer when the words have a sense of purpose, or add a bit of humor." Gouache, ink, acrylic, collage.
