"For a book review of The Night Train by Clyde Edgerton, a story about two teenage best friends and aspiring musicians, one white, one black, in Civil Rights-era North Carolina. During the sketch phase I was so sure that I could work a piano into the illustration somehow—the black-and-white keys being a perfect metaphor for the boys' relationship—but I just couldn't get it to look right. In the end, Nicholas, Alicia and I really liked how this piece turned out with the guitar."
