"CAM—The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis—filled May of 2011 with a month-long series of fundraisers, including not one but two back-to-back art auctions. In homage to a set of Goya lithographs (part of an exhibition on encrypted allegory in art), CAM branded the month as 'Misterios de Mayo,' the 'Mysteries of May.' CAM needed to encourage busy patrons to attend both auctions, less than a week apart: Arts Desire, a party of 'devilish mysteries' and an indulgence of the senses; and Viva la Masters, a black-tie gala that celebrated the city's 'better angels,' including innovators in the arts, science and finance. We developed a single catalog that reflected the personalities of the two events in a sinuous illustration and lettering style. The catalog contained two sections, each sealed shut with a zipper strip, so the very act of opening the auction catalog was as sensual as the art."
