"'Marilyn and Jackie' is one of my favorite Mad Men ad campaigns. We wanted to show how a traditional agency like Sterling Cooper and its clients deal with competitive creative. In this case the creative is the real-life, famous, long-running Maidenform, 'I dreamed...,' campaign. We needed to develop what looked like a traditional Playtex bra ad. That's the tennis ad. And we needed an insight about women and their underthings that looked like it could lead to years of executions, like the Maidenform campaign. Two sides of a personality, or a Madonna/whore thing, worked for the story. The client saw that the agency could do more sexy creative work. But in the end, they stuck with the traditional tried and true. Matthew Weiner wrote the episode. Phil Abraham directed."
