“From The Atlantic’s annual Fiction Issue, ‘Heart Thief’ is a story that takes place in Italy about a man who has written his first book of fiction. In the book he includes one truthful, but very hurtful account that occurred while he was dating the love of his life, who is now a nun. The book gets published and is sent around for sale at bookstores throughout Italy. Only after the book is released does the man begin to feel regret that he was so deceitful to his long-ago love. He fears that she will read the book and know the horrible truth about him. He decides he’d rather have no acclaim at all than to live with the possibility of the nun being hurt, so he frantically travels to every bookstore in the country to remove the books from the shelves.”
