"Cover art for Nicola Upson's novel Angel with Two Faces, which follows author Josephine Tey as she untangles a complex British mystery set in the 1930s. I'm careful to read the books to which I'm assigned, because a publisher's brief (which I am given beforehand) would not have necessarily mentioned details like a small fire burning mysteriously in the middle of a dark lake, in the moonlight. The author works very hard at conjuring indelible mental images for the reader, and that's really where the best ideas are to be gathered. But then there are those occasions when a book will be assigned before the author has even written it, and it's difficult to know if you are doing the author any justice with your work."
