Veronika Burian, designer
“Maiola started off as a student project for Veronika at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, and was expanded later with Greek and Cyrillic versions. It was published in 2005 with Fontshop and then in 2010 with TypeTogether. It is inspired by early Czech type design, in particular by Vojtěch Preissig and Oldřich Menhart. Maiola is clearly a contemporary typeface that is mindful of its historical heritage, implementing old-style features and calligraphic reminiscences, more frankly so in the italic. Nevertheless, through its personality, it attempts to create a welcoming tension on the page, without shouting too loudly at the reader. It handles its expressive tendencies with care and in doing so increases its usability, with legibility being of great importance. Subtle irregularities of the letterforms further enhance the typeface’s dynamic spirit and liveliness. Maiola was one of the early typefaces that took advantage of the Opentype format, adding a whole range of typographic features and large language support. It has won numerous awards, including the Type Directors Club Certificate of Typographic Excellence in 2004.”
