“What designer doesn’t dream of having a solo gallery show? Certainly, we were thrilled to be asked… and then we saw the 5,000-square-foot gallery with 20-foot-high ceilings. How do we fill that with ‘graphic design’? And isn’t design in a gallery, under glass, a little disingenuous? Our three main goals were to make it tactile and experiential, to make it approachable with no pretentious art preening, and to encourage direct dialogue with visitors. Artifacts were displayed on plywood boxes and were meant to be picked up and examined. A 135- by 8-foot banner of our work weaved through the main gallery, flanked by a ‘Wailing (Poster) Wall’ of inner thoughts, milestones, haiku and outside comments about Volume. Visitors contributed to the exhibition by filling out three sticker prompts, and there was even a projected Skype link to Volume’s offices, where visitors could view daily goings-on and have conversations with the staff.”
