Jesús Barrientos, typeface designer
Talavera Type Workshop (Puebla, Mexico), foundry

“The catalyst for Leidener was my thesis paper on the Elseviers, a family of Dutch engravers who had a workshop in Leiden. Under the direction of Dr. Marina Garone, I researched 39 books edited between 1592 and 1678, especially 1611’s Constantini imperatoris and 1657’s Exercitationum mathematicarum. The result is a family of three weights (regular, bold, heavy) with italics, small caps and ornaments, three title variations (display, subhead, subhead italic), a set of initials, and six decoration variants still in progress. The whole investigation about the Elsevier family and insights on the design of Leidener will be published in a type specimen book by Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla.”
