Jesús Barrientos, typeface designer
Talavera Type Workshop (Puebla, Mexico), foundry

“Ecstasy is half of a font project from 2011; its companion typeface is Agony, and both were inspired by the magnificent work of Herb Lubalin, whose original lettering appears in the book American Type Design and Designers (2004). I had only the words the agony and the ecstasy, and even though the sample was rather small, it caught me with its blackletter-like style, unpredictable stains, hard ligatures and soft flourishing, as if the letters gain strength with the irregularity of ink. I began with many calligraphy samples and edits to obtain a complete alphabet, plus numbers and signs, before digitizing everything to make the font. Ecstasy was released in 2012 through MyFonts and was a selection at that year’s Tipos Latinos, a biennial Latin American typography competition and show.”
