“For one day, the New Zealand Herald’s printing press was our $150 million animation flip-book. We created a piece of hardware that let us override the film camera’s internal computer. This gave us control over its frame rate, which we synchronized with an infrared detector. We loaded the printing press with a one-ton, 3,000-frame roll of animation and played it back in one take—filming it all live.”
