Background: The 700 Islands is a travel and lifestyle blog about the Bahamas. We helped our client Vanessa Ansell redesign her site to promote her growing real estate business. The brand is sophisticated, relaxed and beautiful—targeted towards adventurous women who appreciate an authentic experience.
Highlights: The site presents an “insider view” of the Bahamas from the point of view of our client, a native Bahamian. We refined this personal brand based on the client’s rich family history in the Bahamas. Every element—the queen conch, silver top palm, Eleuthera pineapple, sisal plant, shields and flamingo—was chosen for its importance to the island and to the client’s personal experience.
Challenges: We had a lot of existing content to work with: stories, original photography and a popular Instagram account. We soon found that the content needed to be separated into two sites. One site would focus on travel and the other would be focused on a second aspect of the client’s business: wedding vendor referrals. Our greatest challenge was to create two distinct but related brand identities—and two websites.
Favorite details: We are most proud of the logo, as it was the most personal part of the business for the client. We only went through a few rounds of design review before we came to the final look, a gorgeous work of hand-drawn art that strongly reflects the values of the client and of the Bahamas themselves.
Navigational structure: The homepage is built with content tiles that showcase the most recent photos and blog posts. “Experience the Islands” links to a page with a photo and description of each island’s personality. To drive traffic to the real estate posts, we featured properties on the homepage and created a category for “Living” in the navigation. Users can view properties for all the islands, navigate to the property page, and then contact 700 Islands to make a booking.
Anything new: This site gave us the opportunity to create the first iteration of our editorial layout tool, which allows the content creator to create dynamic and engaging layouts without being fixed to a handful of predesigned templates. We also built several bespoke interactive components from the lazy-loaded responsive masonry tiles on the home page, to the synced tab-switching component on each of the island pages.
