Fluid is the term that best describes New York-based art director Alexandre Rochet’s approach to his portfolio site, from the viscous animated background on the front page to the intuitive, constantly moving navigation system Rochet and developer Timothée Roussilhe put in place. “We wanted the users to have an easy, simple navigation with the least amount of clicking possible,” explains Rochet. “For example, at the bottom of the case study page, you don’t have to click to go to the next project. After three seconds of inactivity, the user goes directly to the following project.” The site treats visitors with a selection of Rochet’s work—including 400 images and videos—in a bespoke grid format based on the rule of thirds, the design guideline that divides a composition into nine parts with two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. Custom, detailed animations were created for the site using Greensock and Pixi. The site garnered a lot of visibility from the design industry, including awards from the FWA, Awwwards and the French Design Index.
