Background: 2020 was a bad year. Famously bad. An-entire-chapter-in-a-future-fourth-grade-history-textbook bad. Yet people did some pretty incredible things—things that would be difficult enough under ideal conditions, but became almost heroic given everything else going on in the world that they had to push through. We wanted to celebrate these people with our Browser History campaign, honoring the stories of some individuals on our platform who’ve had a standout year, and inspiring anyone who felt they were up against impossible odds to keep going and get their idea out into the world.

Design core: The site is really an immersive museum for the incredible pieces that Ignasi Monreal created. We asked him to paint six of our customers as heroes inspired by classical art. On the web, visitors have the opportunity to appreciate the incredible richness of detail. There are also plenty of subtle 2020 touches, like the UFOs buzzing the New York City skyline behind Richaud or Tia Adeola’s high fashion face masks.

Favorite details: It’s easy to go over the top with CSS animations—they quickly become distracting or bandwidth killers—but we ended up in a place where they feel fluid and supportive of the site experience.

Challenges: From the beginning of the project, we agreed it had to work flawlessly on mobile, which required a lot of very precise breakpoint designs. Each illustration was also broken apart for animation purposes, so we had to streamline and export hundreds of assets to make sure that the site performance wasn’t compromised on any device.

Navigation structure: The central navigation feature is a Z-axis infinite scroll that flies through all six artworks. Ignasi works digitally and was able to give us these incredibly layered files, so it seemed like a shame not to use them.
