“Buy Local, Eat Natural”—it’s an idea that’s easy to get behind, but actually doing it can be difficult. The British Columbia Dairy Association and British Columbia Agriculture Council worked with Vancouver-based digital creative agency Pound & Grain to create a campaign that would help BC residents put the action behind the words. The Buy Local, Eat Natural site is a bustling digital home for all the campaign activity. It’s driven by a mission to spread knowledge about locally produced food in BC, and it not only features recipes made with local ingredients, it introduces the farmers who produce those ingredients and includes an In Season guide to give shoppers the scoop on what local products are available at certain times throughout the year. The site also features the We Heart Local program, which encourages local businesses to join a database of retailers that support and sell local ingredients, and in turn, program members are featured on the site. Recently, the site hosted the We Heart Local Awards, for which users nominated and voted for their favorite homegrown finds. The awards reached over 630,000 people across British Columbia and resulted in 187% growth in the online community, a success that’s tasty for everyone involved.
