From its locations in Edinburgh, Scotland, and London, the fiercely independent and cutting-edge publishing house Canongate prints the most exciting authors it can find. With a redesign from London-based design agency Human After All, the publishing house’s online platform now highlights its unique story, stunning artwork and close relationship with its authors. “A key decision early on was to remove the platform’s shop function,” says Victoria Talbot, creative director at Human After All. “This enabled user interaction to focus on discovering Canongate’s unique works, craft and personality—rather than being funnelled into a purchase process.” A media wall prominently features the latest Canongate news with articles, events, quotes, and video and audio content from its authors and their books; this media wall extends to several pages, including more specific pages on Canongate’s authors, to bring visitors an in-depth look into the publishing house’s world. An equally extensive ‘About’ page immerses visitors into Canongate’s history with a scrolling timeline of its highlights, engaging imagery and video content. The site is built in the ProcessWire CMS; its advanced caching and minifying features, along with Google’s PageSpeed and with static content served up by Amazon Cloudfront, keep Canongate’s page loading times down to one second.
