Background: The Spiralis Music Trust, a private foundation, approached us to redesign the website for Chou Wen-Chung, a distinguished composer, teacher, cultural ambassador and student of composer Edgard Varèse. The goal was to provide a comprehensive resource for students, composers and musicians to learn about Chung’s unique canon of work and his impact on the development of modern arts, music and culture. The site was launched just ahead of the opening of the Chou Wen-Chung Music Center at the Xinghai Music Conservatory in Guangzhou, China.
Highlights: The compositions and audio written by Chou Wen-Chung; a year-by-year chronology of his achievements; and a comprehensive biography, discography and bibliography. We used images to create a visual narrative of Mr. Chung and to encourage deeper exploration of the content. We also incorporated subtle page transitions and animations to bring visual focus to the imagery and content.
Challenges: Most of the foundation’s original photos, music and text assets going back as far as the 1930s had not been digitized yet, so we managed that process as part of the content production phase, and built a cloud-based content repository for the staff to maintain the assets.
Favorite details: The Chou Wen-Chung website had not been updated in over a decade, so it was an opportunity to start off with a clean slate. We worked with the Spiralis Music Trust staff to completely redesign the website, as well as to organize and develop the content. We directed a photoshoot to build visual assets for the organization, which played a vital role in the site design.
Navigational structure: The overall site structure was intentionally kept flat to make the content discovery easy and compelling. Our goal was to connect with users in a visual way, using the images to help convey the content categories and motivate users to explore further.
Time constraints: Additional features such as a music player and the Chinese language version of the site were added to Phase 2 enhancements due to time constraints and the opening ceremony of the Chou Wen-Chung Music Center in China.
Technical features: We used Sketch and InVision for the site design and Airtable to manage the project and assets. The site was built using a custom Wordpress theme and PHP.
