A standards-compliant site for UC Berkeley's department of Spanish and Portuguese. Because it's a public institution, the content had to be accessible to all users, regardless of browser, operating system or physical limitation. Built on open-source technology—it's written in XHTML, CSS and Javascript, according to W3C standards and usability guidelines—this site is proof positive that using technology thoughtfully and having clean, semantic and well-structured code doesn't have to result in bland and geeky.
• More than 500 custom illustrations are displayed randomly so no two pages look alike.
• The nine month development time included a new logo and corporate identity for the department and interfaces for two online journals.
• The layout changes depending on browser window size; small screens automatically receive the site in a two column layout, while larger screens launch with three or four.
