Twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the interactive storytelling map #Deutchland25 examines how young Germans’ lives have blossomed from the rubble. 72andSunny, MediaMonks and Google Creative Lab collaborated over a short period—nine weeks—to finish the site 25 days before the 25th anniversary. Video interviews produced by director and winner of the 2008 German Film Prize, Bettina Blümner, ask young Germans “What makes you proud about being German today?” and “How do we help young people feel part of a wider community?” The answers range from skateboarding classes to upcycling fashion and community gardens. In addition, users can add their own stories to the mix, linking their opinions to a mark on the interactive map. Users can choose to navigate the site through the map or by story themes. The development team simplified the code as much as possible to quicken load times, and relied on external services like YouTube and Google Maps to avoid reinventing the wheel. The resulting site creates a mosaic of modern Germany, with all its resilience and youthful hopes.
