Background: The website was created as a personal portfolio for Emilie Aubry, a queer French film editor and partner at Church Edit, to present her body of work to potential clients such as directors, production companies, agencies and brands. The audience is highly visual and industry-aware, so the site needed to function as a clear and focused showcase rather than an expressive digital playground. The work itself carries the site’s emotional weight.

Design core: The design is defined by reduction. Emilie’s editing style is driven by rhythm, emotion and restraint, often expressed through a stripped-down visual language that feels clean yet subtly provocative. Translating that sensibility into a digital interface was central to the project. As every element we included had to justify its presence, the resulting structure is minimal and direct, prioritizing the content.

Favorite details: One of the most important design elements is the balance between neutrality and character. In a portfolio context, it is easy for design to either disappear completely or become too dominant. We focused on subtle details that introduce rhythm without distraction. A good example is the toggle that switches between list view and grid view with thumbnails. It is a small interaction, but it gives users control over how they browse the work. These understated moments create engagement while maintaining clarity.

Typography was another key area. When a design is this minimal, typography carries much of the atmosphere. Although it appears simple, the final selection came after extensive research and testing. The type had to feel precise and confident without becoming decorative. It needed to support the films rather than compete with them. That balance was one of the more challenging aspects of the project.

Challenges: Reduction without losing expression. When working with a strong visual personality, the temptation is to amplify it. Instead, we focused on distillation. The navigation structure reflects this approach. It is straightforward and intuitive, allowing quick access to projects without unnecessary layers. The simplicity supports the goal of immediate immersion into the work.
