Although Paris tops most tourist destination lists, Marseille—France's second-largest city on the Mediterranean—is often overlooked. Night Walk in Marseille allows armchair tourists to explore the city's artistic riches in an interactive, tour-guided experience powered by Google Maps. Virtual travelers follow local audio storyteller Julie de Muer down a Street View route peppered with videos, photos and backstories, mainly about the city's renowned street art. Users can also watch a jam session by local Afro-Caribbean songwriter David Walters, follow a cat into a kitchen where a chef prepares hake fillet and listen to a touching childhood story from a Vietnamese immigrant. 72andSunny Amsterdam and MediaMonks collaborated to complete the project in two months. The first nighttime Street View features hundreds of 360-degree photospheres stitched together with Pano2VR and CSS3 and binaural recordings for stereo sound. Mobile users are treated to a few extras via Google Places API, which suggests similar locations to discover in their own cities. More than one million users took the Night Walk, and it generated more than 40 million social media impressions, becoming a trending topic on Twitter in France. The developers also built a proprietary framework so that future cities can be explored.
