Background: The goal of the website is to give users a peak of ibis Styles’ stylish personality as well as redesign the ibis Styles Paris Porte d’Orléans hotel branch with people’s sketches. With help from MRM//McCann, we created a fun collaborative game where users draw their own online sketches centered on three different themes: lobby, bedroom and the kid corner, all of which are immediately saved onto the website on each themed board.
Highlights: Since the core feature is to allow users to draw and to display their authentic hand-drawn style sketches on the different boards, we wanted the game to be fun for all users—so we added a countdown, a randomizer button to get another drawing suggestion and the possibility to cancel the user’s last stroke.
Challenges: In terms of both technique and design, creating the hand-drawn style sketches was challenging, especially since we wanted the sketches to be as authentic as possible but also avoid it deviating into a distinct childish drawing style.
Favorite details: We definitely like the infinite themed boards, but also the font and the animation we created for the site as well. At first, we weren’t satisfied with the font animations and we went through different possibilities and techniques before we decided to create our own.
Anything new: We are very passionate about web design and coding, but we had never created our own font and font animation before. However, thanks to the program, Fontforge, we were able to create the font we wanted.
Technical features: We used our own WEBGL framework for the infinite board, which allows users to have more control and more possibilities. Thanks to the custom framework, users can now draw all the sketches they want, which be automatically saved onto the website. For us, we were able to store how users drew on their computers and animate their sketches in the same way.
