Global design company IDEO created and developed a new website that showcases both its portfolio and its company culture. A new, typography-heavy layout that strongly features the typefaces Sentinel and Gotham forms the backbone of the site’s design, with fresh photography and accents of yellow and black that recall highlighted books and notes. “For content, we simplified the site to three menu items: Work, Play and Tools,” says Michael Hendrix, partner at IDEO. “Each of these sections features a different facet of IDEO—a curated portfolio of design, ideas and personalities of IDEOers, and resources available through our brand’s expansion, such as [online design school] IDEO U and [online design community] OpenIDEO.” The landing page introduces an element of playfulness through a typewritten reveal of the main menu, selecting a triplet of ideas that relate to the main menu concepts, such as “Rock. Paper. Scissors.” or “Heads. Tails. Do-over.” Keeping simplicity at the forefront of the site design, IDEO utilized the content management system Craft along with a custom API to break down content into components and generate other content types from referenced material, enabling the site’s editors to easily create new content and seed it throughout the site.
