Background: Online interactive guide “When to Travel” brings Bristol, United Kingdom–based travel company Inside Asia Tours’s expert knowledge and insights to life by demonstrating its knowledge of different cultural events, and giving users the best times to travel. Deeply routed around the most popular searched terms that users use when researching holiday plans, the resulting platform is designed around the core theme of “When to Travel.”
Highlights: Horizontally scrolling pages to create a timeline feel, which is combined with a number of custom interactions and transitions to make the experience feel as immersive as possible.
Challenges: Coming up with a way to showcase such a vast number of events and content in a unique and engaging format.
Favorite details: We wanted to create a unique timeline that provides an immersive way of browsing. We achieved this through a combination of hand-built front-end interactions and a horizontally scrolling layout that showcases the events in an interesting format.
Navigational structure: The navigation of the site is rooted around the locations that our client Inside Asia Tours operates in: Japan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. After choosing a location, users can navigate the timelines using the month selector at the bottom and a simple toggle between viewing events or the weather. Although there is a lot of different interface elements, we’ve aimed to keep them clearly separated based on their functionalities to avoid any confusion.
Approach: As we were dealing with such large volumes of content, including large imagery and Google map integrations, optimizing the performance of the site was vital to provide a smooth experience. We spent considerable time squeezing out every bit of performance possible to ensure all assets were loaded offsite and a number of code optimizations implemented.
