Responses by Filippo Cipriani, head of studio, Adoratorio.

Background: The Intrusion Project was conceived as a digital homage to Radio Alice, a revolutionary voice in 1970s Bologna, channeling the spirit of political and cultural dissent. Radio Alice redefined broadcasting norms with its eclectic programming that ranged from sharp political commentary to intimate personal stories, all set to the iconic sounds of musical artists from Rino Gaetano to Beethoven. Its spontaneous and vibrant format perfectly captured the era’s chaotic creativity, but this groundbreaking venture was abruptly halted on March 12, 1977 when a police raid prematurely silenced the station under false accusations of inciting violence.

Today, the spirit of Radio Alice has been reignited by the Intrusion Project, a visionary initiative crafted by our design studio upon request of our friend and esteemed colleague Andrea Stillacci from ad agency Herezie, who curated the artistic musical contributions. This site targets enthusiasts of history, political activism and the arts, aiming to resonate with those who appreciate the transformative power of media in social movements.

Larger pictures: While the website does play a role in launching a music album tailored for a niche audience, this aspect is subtle. The album complements the unfolding historical narrative, adding an auditory dimension that deepens the immersive experience. But its inclusion not just about promotion; it’s about enriching the story and enhancing the impact through a seamless blend of sound and visuals. It’s a celebration of Radio Alice’s legacy, using every tool in our digital arsenal to keep the station’s revolutionary spirit alive in the hearts and minds of a new generation.

Design core: The site’s core features include six audio-reactive shaders that bring the archival sounds of Radio Alice to life in a visually dynamic environment. The design employs a brutalist aesthetic that emphasizes raw, unpolished elements to mirror the disruptive nature of the radio station.

Favorite details: I am particularly proud of the audio-reactive shaders. These not only create a mesmerizing visual experience synced to historical broadcasts, but also embody Radio Alice’s chaos and creativity. Their technical sophistication allows these elements to be adaptable and exportable, which could lead to further creative explorations outside the site.

Challenges: Merging the audio-reactive shaders with the archival audio in a way that was technically robust and deeply respectful of the historical content. Our approach was to strip away any superfluous elements, presenting the facts with stark clarity and directness. This required us to craft an experience that was both impactful and authentically minimalistic, ensuring that every design choice honored the raw, unembellished truths of the past. The goal was to achieve a balance where aesthetic simplicity met historical depth, avoiding unnecessary embellishment while highlighting the original intensity of Radio Alice’s broadcasts.

Navigation structure: In designing the navigation, we aimed for simplicity and directness. We stripped everything back to basics to focus attention squarely on what matters: the content’s depth, the historical narrative, the artistic undertones of the musical project and the profound impact on Italy’s collective memory. This bare-bones approach isn’t just about ease of use—it creates an immersive journey that feels as spontaneous and revelatory as flipping through Radio Alices original broadcasts. Each click reveals a new layer, engaging users deeply as they uncover the echoes of the past, presented with crystal-clear intent and minimal distraction.

Technology: The site was developed using HTML5, CSS3 for styling and JavaScript for interactive elements, with WebGL to handle the complex visualizations of the audio-reactive shaders. These technologies were chosen for their robustness and flexibility, enabling us to create a seamless, dynamic user experience.
