Responses by Isaac Fayemi, design director, and Seyi Oluwadare, technical lead, Studio Null.

Background: “Korty EO is one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising content creators based in Lagos, Nigeria. We made this website to showcase her amazing persona and work in a digital experience,” say Isaac Fayemi and Seyi Oluwadare. “We wanted to build an experience that highlights Korty and what she does, powered by delightful images, background information and videos.”

Design core: “We designed the homepage to give a quick glimpse into her work and persona and act as a sort of hub that connects all the pages on the website,” Fayemi and Oluwadare say. “We worked with a pseudo-editorial style, emphasizing typography and interactivity. We wanted to show her growth and the progression of her work by making the scroll in the work section horizontal. Also, Korty had a bunch of images that aligned with our aesthetic, so we wanted to make a cool gallery out of it.”

Favorite details: “The parallax effect tied to the user’s scroll at the beginning of the profile page and the horizontal scroll experience in the work section,” Fayemi and Oluwadare say. “We are proud of them because they took a lot of time and effort to perfect, and they turned out really, really great.”

Challenges: “From the beginning, we knew we wanted to experiment with a horizontal scroll—for storytelling purposes—and an unconventional but grid-based layout,” the pair says. “These, coupled with the need to make the site responsive and beautiful on most screen sizes, proved to be quite challenging.”

New lessons: “I learned how to structure my code better in Nuxt and got better at using GSAP’s scroll trigger,” says Oluwadare.

“This was my first project collaborating with Seyi, and working with him and our motion designer Femi Fashikun greatly improved my handoff process,” says Fayemi. “Designing the site to be responsive was slightly challenging, so I learned a lot while figuring it out.”

Navigation structure: “We wanted the homepage to work as a sort of social media profile, giving visitors a glimpse into Korty’s work and persona while providing links to her profiles on the internet,” say Fayemi and Oluwadare. “We also wanted the website to read like a book: you open a page, experience it and then move onto the next page when you’re done—or close it if you don’t like it!”

Technology: “The front end is built with HTML5, SCSS and JavaScript ES6 with Nuxt and GreenSock for the animations,” the pair explains.

Special technical features: “We used GSAP for advanced animations and Locomotive Scroll for smooth scrolling, combining the two to create the smoothest parallax effect,” Fayemi and Oluwadare say.
