Background: We aimed to craft a modern digital experience for Kriss Real Estate (KrissRE) that would tell its story. We wanted to define its digital-first brand and create a unique way to present its core values, philosophy, approach and work. Our ultimate goal was to make users want to discover, play and explore the story of this real estate development company in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Our target audiences are architects, developers and potential clients.
Challenges: Our biggest design challenge was that we had a significant lack of visual content. We approached the problem with extensive art direction, our own visuals and animated 3-D models that represented each project. The biggest development challenge was the novelty of the homepage navigation. We didn’t have any sources of inspiration for many of the elements that we had to implement to achieve the desired appearance, so we had to figure that out on our own.
Navigational structure: Our aim was to create an easy and intuitive flow for users between the pages without the need for clicking on the main navigation button. The navigation on the homepage references architectural plans, and the red line in the middle is controlled by mouse scroll. All of this is designed from a bird’s eye view so the overall look has a “gaming”-like feel.
Technical features: The visual design stack was made using Sketch, Photoshop and Illustrator. The 3-D models and animations were designed in Cinema 4D. After Effects were used to bring the site design to life. Animations were developed by combining GSAP and Paper.js (big thanks to Jürg Lehni and Jonathan Puckey who kept the Paper.js library going for as long as possible). As far as the development stack is concerned, we were using roots’ sage as a Wordpress development boilerplate, which allowed us to use the full potential of ES6 and Webpack to write the templates in Laravel’s Blade templating engine.
Alternative approach: We are happy about the final look, but talking specifically, there are some boring animations that we would change. Also, we would change the mobile device site’s slow performance.
