Background: This project, a tribute to Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev on the 150th anniversary of his birth, educates younger generations on the fascinating subject of chemistry through technology. We strongly believe that education must include elements that stimulate visual cognitive processes and inspire students to enjoy learning. The site addresses the digital transformation needed in education to reach new generations. Mendeleev.me aims to be a reference for students, teachers and people who are just passionate about chemistry.

Favorite design: Our product is user friendly at its core and provides a cohesive design with a focus on functionality. Whether on the iPhone app, iPad app or online site, we take pride in the consistent design and the information’s presentation.

Navigational features: Navigating through the website and its sister iOS app is intuitive. We wanted to keep it as simple as possible to avoid user confusion. For example, users can click Au (Gold) and the element’s details will open in the same window. The escape key can be used to close the details screen. Visitors that directly link to an element’s page, like to mendeleev.me/Element/Au, can also hit the escape key to be redirected to the main screen. When users search for specific elements, the details screen automatically opens; when partial searches are found—like if a user searches for “H”—the site offers a list of options.

Flexibility: The site has multilanguage support for English, French, German, Romanian and Russian. One cool feature is that the site automatically syncs mutiple browser tabs when the language is changed.

Technology: For the web platform, our team used Bootstrap 4, Net MVC C#, Node.js, Vue.js and SQL 2014.
