Background: When the Mott Foundation celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2016, it centered its annual report on the theme of being “90 Years Young.” Using this print annual report as a springboard, Mott and Vermilion partnered to create an online, interactive version of the report, which doubles as an inspiring and detailed timeline of the Mott Foundation’s history as a change-maker in Flint, Michigan, nationwide and across the globe.
Highlights: An annual message from Mott Chairman and CEO William S. White, detailing the rich and compelling history of the Foundation; a vertical scrolling experience, highlighted by color-animated archival images and a decade-by-decade summary of key milestones; and most important, the fluid interactive animation between the different sections, decades and milestones.
Challenges: A 90-year interactive timeline providing a robust body of content and history for consideration and prioritization was vital. Each decade required careful selections of the most important key milestones and events. Building an engaging online creative experience would have been much more difficult without Mott Foundation’s careful curation of the right milestones, photography and introductory language that ties everything together.
Favorite details: That the website supports Mott’s decades of philanthropy in a direct and visually intuitive way. The animated transitions and details also give the content and history a fluid and engaging quality that encourages exploration.
Navigational structure: Working with nine decades of events and milestones was an invitation to focus on each decade as an “access point.” Rather than display the decades in a vertical-scrolling, linear experience, we loved the idea of showcasing each decade as a “color gradation” in order from left to right.
