Background: Nestled in the heart of Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest, surrounded by sea, cedars and West Coast wildlife is family-owned Nimmo Bay Resort. No roads lead to this luxury lodge, and the seclusion has enabled it to provide once-in-a-lifetime retreats for almost four decades. This experience is designed to connect the rustic luxury resort and travelers seeking remote and bucket-list type of travel.
Designed to invigorate the senses, the website leverages stunning visuals and detailed copy to bring the digital experience to life. Expansive video above the fold immediately establishes Nimmo Bay as a destination unlike any other. Oversized, dynamic header photographs reveal more of the image as you scroll, drawing the visitor further into this place. When you visit this site, you’re immersed in this coastal habitat: standing on a floating dock in salty ocean air, breathing in the fragrance of old-growth forest and waiting to hear the crack of a twig under a Grizzly paw.
Design core: Designed for mobile first, the site’s video and visuals have been planned and created to accommodate the smallest screens and up. The Nimmo Bay experience is bigger than life and can only be communicated with large visuals and immersive videos. This site leverages oversized image headers to demonstrate the remoteness of this destination.
Challenges: As Nimmo Bay has been our client since 2013, we have a longstanding relationship with it, so there’s a lot of trust built into our design processes. The biggest challenge were the content and communication. This is a redesign—we were tasked with overhauling the entire written and visual content. The new site offers a contemporary approach to storytelling with an immersive visual experience.
The other challenge involved creating new video formats for various screen sizes. Videos play a huge part in the storytelling on this website; however, the aspect ratio for desktop and mobile screens are very different. We re-engineered our web pages to detect screen sizes and delivered custom videos based on the user’s preferences.
