Simple, yet characterful. Tight, but edgy. These are the ideas that guided the design of Copenhagen-based digital design duo Norgram’s site. Formed by Sebastian Gram and Mathias Høst Normark—the gram and nor of Norgram respectively—the studio creates work that follows a strong design ethos: Successful work comes from a clear sense of purpose. That purpose provides the explorative process by which innovative design occurs. Collaboration is key to creating not only great work, but fresh ideas. And timeless design is always best.

Gram and Normark collaborated with indie video game studio Set Snail’s developer Morten Claussen and turned the typical site on its side. Visitors must scroll horizontally to access the site’s content, like turning pages in a book; this distinct system enabled Gram and Normark to attempt a new method of making page layouts. A project gallery showcases Norgram’s work with expansive case studies, walking readers through the duo’s thoughtful design process. A pop-up menu on the site’s left border enables easy access to navigation, as well as company information and social links. A simple black-and-white layout with a tight grid and clean typography makes the site a pleasure to browse.

The entire site was developed with JavaScript and the TweenMax framework from GreenSock; a single HTML entry contains the site’s basic elements and references to text and image content, a 50-to-60-line CSS file contains the fonts and a CSS animation for the anchor tags rounds out the site’s impressively simple development. Instead of being placed as image files or SVGs, all the illustrations and diagrams on the site were programmed, ensuring that Norgram’s site will look great on any device. The site has garnered 14,000 visitors since its launch, and has received accolades from the FWA and lots of buzz on Twitter.
