The first thing visitors may notice, when traveling to Zagreb, Croatia–based design studio north2’s new site, is the simplicity of its layout. Wanting to avoid visual clutter, north2 refined its vision for its website into featuring three predominant elements: bright colors, bold typography and large imagery. Limiting its design elements, however, did not limit the playfulness imbued by north2 into the site. Instead of taking the well-traveled road of using thumbnails of portfolio work as links to case studies, the design studio created a custom photo to go with each project—a hand holding an object that visually clues visitors to the client, like a roll of film for Croatian production company Dim Studio’s site or a shower head for Hassan Abul, a Dubai-based luxury building material manufacturer.
Custom transition animations and interactive features are sprinkled throughout north2’s site. For example, the “About Us” page offers visitors a small interactive game. Circles randomly overlay each team member’s headshot, enabling users to mix and match different parts of team members. If visitors want to navigate to a different profile, they must drag the corresponding circle off the headshot; a seamless transition to the next profile rewards visitors. The interactivity and elegant animations keep north2’s playful personality to the forefront.
The site was built with the CMS MODX for its freeing front-end capabilities, and Canvas and EaselJS provided the animations and image manipulations. north2’s site received an Awwwards Site of the Day and positive impressions from the online design community.
