Challenged by the Internet, book stores, cafes and public behaviors, libraries no longer control the information franchise. As part of a comprehensive program to pay homage to the evolving role of libraries in society and to reassert the Free Library of Philadelphia’s standing, the central branch of this public institution is planning a $60 million architectural renovation. To further communicate this library’s adaptation to societal changes, they’ve redesigned their site. The makeover includes a dramatic simplification that allows users to explore collections, ask questions, view an events calendar and obtain library cards. Optimized for low-bandwidth Internet connections, it provides access to all library content.

• One of the features added to make the site 508-compliant enables visitors to increase the font size.

• An efficient search application helps visitors choose from the Free’s world class collections even when beginning with a broad search.

• Two-and-a-half-year development time.
