Background: Since 2014, the Provider Store has been creating and acquiring pieces for the home, chosen to be both artful and functional. Nestled away in Sydney’s Surry Hills, the store focuses on slow-made, sustainable and ethically produced products from Japanese and local Australian artists; at its store, you can discover hand-picked homeware and hear the stories behind each piece. The goal of this new website was to translate this warm retail experience online and grow Provider’s e-commerce business by making this experience accessible to customers around the world.
Design core: The site encompasses the idea of telling the rich story behind each of the products. On the detail product pages, you can see photos of them being made by master craftsmen, read their stories and see a hand-drawn map of its origin. To echo the slow-made nature of the products, we purposefully used slow interactions and animations to convey that as well as imbue a calm feeling into the site.
Provider is also well-known for its signature candle fragrances. To reflect that, we visualized the notes in ways that online customers would get a sense of the fragrance for which they’re shopping.
Challenges: We were lucky that the client gave us the time to design and develop the site properly. The process was not restricted by deadlines, which gave us the freedom and flexibility to experiment and explore creative solutions in partnership with the client.
The most challenging aspect proved to be generating all new content for more than 100 products. We had to reshoot, write and illustrate content for each product in order to tell the story behind its creation. For the photography, we partnered with local photographers Nick Tsindos and Kayla White to beautifully capture each product. We worked with Provider’s founder Tara Bennett to create the illustrations for the website.
Navigation structure: The navigation structure was designed to uncover the product categories, so users would easily find the types of products they’re looking for. Since it’s an e-commerce website, being able to find and purchase products makes the site successful for the business. The site’s design achieves this across all devices.
Technology: The site was built on Shopify with a completely bespoke design and build. We utilized Shopify sections and custom fields to build out a flexible content structure that fit the design. Shopify is great to work with, has solid e-commerce features and is super flexible when it comes to building out the design.
