For his next project, Puerto Rican rapper Residente traveled to China, countries in the Caucasus region, Siberia and West Africa to meet with people in these regions and record at studios there. Digital design firm Hello Monday drew inspiration from his journey around the world to create a topographically inspired design for Residente’s online platform. “When you land on the site, you literally land on a map like a drop,” says Andreas Anderskou, president at Hello Monday. “Like water rings, you can see how close other visitors are to you, and you can add a personal message.” Visitiors can click and drag around the landing page to explore other visitors—with their comments suspended in the site’s topographical lines—or to the five sections of the site that detail Residente’s journey, from Siberia back to Puerto Rico. Each section features images and videos of the respective region’s local culture, as well as the social and economic adversities faced by the population. Hello Monday implemented PHP to store and retrieve visitor data, and the cloud-based Contentful provides the site’s CMS.
Hello Monday also created Residente’s branding, something that enabled the firm to create a visually coherent language for the rapper. “Being in control of both creative processes ensures that everything feels visually and conceptually coherent,” Anderskou explains. “As an example, we’re using the same phonetic alphabet for the countries on the site that we’re using for the logotype. In addition, we always make a big effort to put Hello Monday’s team members on projects they’re passionate about. So for this project, the team consisted of a bunch of music lovers and performers.”
