For 70 years, the Richard King Mellon Foundation of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has invested in programs that ensure the conservation of southwestern Pennsylvania’s natural heritage and increase the quality of the region’s education and other social programs. For its new site, Pittsburgh- and Honolulu-based design agency Wall-to-Wall Studios (W|W) emphasizes the foundation’s information-rich stories and photography with elegant interactions. The site’s Grants section features a filterable database, enabling visitors to search through several years of the foundation’s history by grantee, year, amount, category or type. To serve up image content on small devices, the site uses a Ruby-on-Rails gem called Browser, which conditionally checks whether the user is accessing the site on a desktop, tablet or mobile device. The site was built with W|W’s CMS; to create the database for the Grants section, W|W used a custom module and AngularJS.
