Background: As a parenting-oriented editorial in media company Bustle Digital Group’s portfolio, Romper speaks to the informed, stylish, on-the-go mom. Our design uses a clear path of consumption to eloquently balance dense content with spatial imagery as motherhood itself balances moments of calm and chaos. Romper features a warm palette that instantly conveys comfortability and reliability to the user.
Design core: It was important that our design was relatable as well as realistic through the visual stories Romper tells. We leveraged the extensive card system we created for previous Bustle Digital Group brands, making this our sixth website built on the same CMS and product system we developed five years ago.
Favorite details: We created multifaceted reading experiences that enable moms with all kinds of schedules to engage with content in formats that fit their consumption habits. Romper’s new site provides them with quick hits of information throughout the day, as well as giving them a relaxing space to unwind and dive deep into long-form content in the evening.
Moms are constantly on the lookout for the latest and safest products as their children’s needs are ever changing. We simplified the shopping experience to let them quickly sort by age-range and scan for the products that meet their needs at that moment.
Time constraints: We only had one month to rethink Romper from top to bottom. Through highly collaborative work sessions and a regular cadence of meetings, we prioritized and focused on the most important elements of the site first, and then let the design naturally expand throughout to the remaining pages and elements.
Navigational features: Moms on the go don’t always have the luxury of searching for content specific to their needs, whether it be new insights around pregnancy or how to deal with remote learning for toddlers. We elevated the prominence of Romper’s most important categories to remove the burden of searching for the right content.
