Rush, the quintessential sci-fi prog rock band, has fantasized about presiding over powerful technology through its lyrics: “We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx/Our great computers fill the hallowed halls.” Now, for its 40th anniversary tour, with more than 40 million records sold, Rush is filling hallowed halls with its great website. The new responsive site, designed by two digital agencies, Plank of Montreal and Happy Cog of Philadelphia, celebrates the band’s storied history as well as its eventful present. A complete discography allows fans to scroll through the years by album cover. The Tour page enables users to see the schedule and easily click to purchase tickets, all in one place. The site relies on a robust grid system and a pinned navigation that stays in view at all times. Bold typefaces complement large photos and artwork. Fun interactive details, such as the ability to flip an album cover to the backside with a click, have kept fans engaged. The web development community were fans not only of the elegant code, writes Warren Wilansky, founder of Plank, but also “we discovered a lot of closet Rush fans amongst our peers that we didn’t know about.” Since the launch, the site has received more than 2.5 million pageviews.
