The Polar Bear Plunge promotes the 2010 launch of the San Diego Zoo’s popular Polar Bear Exhibit. Through a series of games, the site experience provides a glimpse into how polar bears live in the Arctic, and the environmental changes they’re facing due to extreme climate change.

The main feature is a social media application that enables users to create virtual Arctic ice by making pledges to decrease their carbon footprint by recycling old computers, printers and cell phones, washing clothes in cold water and buying energy-efficient appliances when replacing old ones. When a user makes a pledge, a piece of the Arctic ice virtually grows back, and their pledge is posted to their Facebook profile wall.

• Content includes a temperature reading from Barrow, Alaska.

• The online games and social networking elements of the site take the challenges polar bears face in the Arctic and make them more “personal.”

• A link to a Carbon Footprint Calculator enables visitors not only to determine their personal carbon footprint, but to donate the amount of the offset.
