A three-year undertaking from artist and creative director Evan Boehm and London-based animation studio nexus, this project adapts author Jeff Noon’s short story “Solace” into an interactive animation—a real-time liquid that doubles as a web cartoon. In each of the eighteen interactive scenes, different animated components render and react, based on clicking from the viewers. Two bespoke liquid engines help accomplish this real-time rendering: one engine controls the liquid simulation, which powers the animated characters and interactions, and the other engine controls the sound, which sometimes requires interactions from the audience to advance. The site runs on JavaScript, making use of Matter.js, Paper.js and Tone.js.
