Background: The website acts as a photography portfolio for the renowned Zurich-based Studio Willen. One of the cofounders, David Willen, lives next to our agency in Zurich, so this website was born from our personal relationship. We wanted it to stand out from other portfolios out there in the digital universe, however, we are amazed by how much feedback the site has gotten thus far.
Design core: Although the site is a photographer’s portfolio where pictures are king, we matched it perfectly with typography. Through bold and clean type, the site presents a very cool editorial look and feel. One of the main goals was to tell the stories behind David’s work—not only show pictures.
Favorite details: The synergy between pictures and texts. The website is nothing like a common portfolio.
Challenges: Showing the pictures in a nice balance between wide-space and full-screen. David only shoots pictures in a 4:3 ratio, which means that there was no full-screen possible.
New lessons: Working with David proved a very inspiring experience. Photographers are more open to web experience than you might think!
Navigation structure: We wanted to create a fast, natural browsing experience through David’s work. To avoid categories and filters, we decided to split his work into only two parts: projects and commissioned. These parts are always reachable without disturbing the pictures and without using the main navigation at the top left.
